The Dr. Lawrence Foster Scholarship
The purpose of the Dr. Lawrence Foster Scholarship is to provide an annual scholarship award to full- or part-time undergraduate philosophy majors in the College of Liberal Arts. The award is meant to honor the life and work of Dr. Lawrence (“Larry”) Foster, professor of philosophy emeritus, and former chair of the Department of Philosophy at UMass Boston from 1983 to 2002. There is a single award of $1,000 available for 2025.
Eligibility Criteria:
• Open to all philosophy majors and only philosophy majors.
• Transfer students are not eligible the year they transfer.
• Open to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Freshmen are not eligible.

- Once you are deemed eligible for the award, students will be asked to solicit a recommendation letter from a single member of the UMB philosophy faculty (only philosophy letters accepted). If a student has transferred, we will accept a single recommendation letter from philosophy/humanities faculty at other institutions. However, a letter from a UMB philosophy faculty will still be needed.
