The Gilman J. Hébert Scholarship
Gilman Hébert was a life-long educator who possessed the gift of bringing people together in extraordinary ways and making them feel that they could contribute. In his role at the Department of Education, he was recognized as a state and national leader in bilingual education. His sensitivity to other cultures allowed him to make a significant impact on the instruction to students with diverse language and cultural backgrounds.
Gil’s creation of programs to help those with a diverse background was his passion. Health education, migrant education, AIDS/HIV training, drug-free schools, and safe schools for gay and lesbian youth is where he and his colleagues had an impact. As much as he played a role in the education system his primary passion was for his family, friends, and life. Those who were fortunate enough to know him are richer for it today.
Impact
